Funky and Recycled Jewelry

We all got up early this morning to go to a monster garage sale put on by our local Rotary Club for the Queensland Flood Appeal. We had donated a lot of the things ourselves that were to be sold and I was overwhelmed by how much it seemed that everyone had donated - they had to move into a bigger building! What does this have to do with gifts? Well my daughter was busy looking through all of the jewelry and bags as she's decided she is now a 'girly girl' - only a couple of weeks ago she was a tomboy (apparently)! Sometimes you can find your best pieces of jewelry quite by chance and it was by chance that I came across this bracelet online -

Recycled Record Cuff Bracelet - $ 29.95

From: Vat19.com: Curiously Awesome Gifts

My daughter thinks it's awesome (apparently cuff bracelets are really cool) and I think it's great to see yet another use for our old vinyl records. Here's the blurb from the company -

The Recycled Record Cuff Bracelet turns discarded vinyl LPs into a simple and elegant fashion accessory. The shiny surface coupled with the vinyl's tiny grooves adds a dash of "awesome" to this eco-friendly and innovative recycled item. While it features enough "give" to fit most wrists, the Recycled Record Cuff can be stretched further by immersing in hot water. Handmade in the USA with a rhodium-plated backing.

Looking around I have found that you can find lots of jewelry made from recycled things online and some of it is really groovy, or should I say sick!

This bangle style bracelet is made of newspapers and is handwoven in India - a cool way to show that 'green is chic.'

Do you remember when you were younger and a boy would give you the ring from his soda can - now that was recycled jewelry and we didn't even know we were being 'green' and 'chic' we just thought it was love!

Well I haven't come across any of these rings for sale online, but I have found this -

These pendants are handmade using vintage bottle caps and I think they look gorgeous - it takes me back way too many years.

If you don't like the peace sign logo they are actually available in a selection of different designs.

I hope you've enjoyed these few items of recycled jewelry that I've found for you - it is amazing how much is available online so you may find another post with some of my other recycled jewelry finds at a later date!

Mother's Day Gift Ideas

Mother's Day will soon be here again, but what do you buy the woman who gave you life? It's a question that's asked by millions of people around the world.

My mother loves to read, she also likes to travel overseas on holidays. One of the problems she has is taking enough books for her to read when she's traveling and not adding too much weight to her luggage - my solution for her is going to be a Kindle.

The best gifts are the ones that are special to her and things that she enjoys doing. Gifts that you make yourself are usually special too and you can find some great gift ideas at DIY Gifts. An idea that a friend of mine was given one year was an edible bunch of flowers. Her children put some strawberries onto long skewers and dipped them into chocolate (they used milk chocolate on some and white chocolate on others) and then let them dry and arranged them in a vase for her......she still talks about that gift years later.

Photos are also very important to a mom, my sister in law's three sons had a professional photographer take their picture for her one year and I think that's the best gift she's ever recieved.

Talking Photo Album

This talking photo album is great because you can also add your voice to the photos - ideal if you live quite a way away from your mom.

More gift ideas tomorrow.

Welcome to Unique and Funky Gifts

I love finding great gift ideas for people and with the internet there's a mound of funky gift ideas to suit just about everyone. I love 'discovering' ideal presents for people so when I was thinking about what I could blog about this seemed ideal.

I write a number of different gift lenses on Squidoo, but sometimes you just see one thing that is awesome, but you really don't want to write a whole webpage about it, you do however want to show people your gift idea.

I will just mention that a lot of the 'finds' I make will give me a commission if you buy them off of this blog. This is how I supplement my income (hey, wouldn't you like to be able to make money doing something you love?). If you want to supplement your income then check out my blog Swimming with Giant Squids, if you want to see lots of gift ideas then subscribe to this blog.

Let's kick it off with some Star Wars flashers - everyone knows someone who loves Star Wars, don't they? I have a friend who would absolutely love to get this for his birthday.

Then of course there's this unique idea for Mother's Day - a tea you infuse with vodka (or other spirit) to produce a cocktail! I think it sounds like an absolutely fun idea for a girls afternoon tea party (hic!) and I know my mother would have fun taste testing them with a couple of her girlfriends :)

That's all for today, but do come back to see what other gift ideas I can offer you.
